As the story goes, the son of the rose was born on a wet spring morning, just as the birds arose and the fog lifted from the earth. His birth into the world was silent, the petals opening as he gained strength and pushed them back. He spent his childhood in his rose, playing with the grasshoppers and bees that would visit him. But, however much he loved his rose and his life among the wild flowers, he desired voyage and exploration. He explained his woes to his insect friends, and each would listen and say they understood, but each were free to leave and explore on the wing, not trapped by the tall stem and the petals of his rose. One afternoon he met a butterfly who was traveling past. The butterfly agreed to take the boy to the next meadow. He jumped on her back and held tightly onto her antennae. They flew through the wind and she spiraled around the tops of the trees. It was the most exhilarating experience of his life. The boy and the butterfly fell in love and traveled together on many adventures. So next time you see a butterfly, try to look carefully for the boy holding on to her back, riding high with adventure.
